How to Play Hangman Score

Hangman Score is a modern take on the classic word-guessing game — with a competitive twist. Every letter you guess, every second you take, and every mistake you make is tracked to produce a final score. Here's everything you need to get started.

The Basics

Hangman Score is played in rounds. Each round, a random secret word is selected from one of eleven categories: Animals, Technology, Food & Drink, Nature, Science, Sports, Music, Countries, Entertainment, History, or General. The category is displayed on screen throughout the round, giving you a helpful hint.

The word is shown as a row of blank dashes — one dash per letter. Your job is to figure out the hidden word by guessing one letter at a time before the hangman figure is fully drawn.

You have 6 lives. Each wrong guess draws another part of the hangman and costs you one life. Guess all the letters correctly before running out of lives, and you win the round. Run out of lives first, and the word is revealed and the round ends in a loss.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough
1
Sign in

Use your Google account to sign in. This lets the game save your scores, build your personal history, and place you on the global leaderboard.

2
Start a game

Click Play Now from any page. The game instantly loads a new random word from one of the eleven categories.

3
Read the clues

Before guessing, check two things: the number of dashes tells you the word length, and the category label tells you the topic. Both narrow down your options significantly.

4
Guess letters

Tap any letter on the on-screen keyboard, or press a key on your physical keyboard. The game immediately shows whether the letter is in the word (all matching positions light up) or not (a body part is added to the figure).

5
Complete the word

Keep guessing until every blank is filled. You win! Your score is calculated instantly and saved to your history and the leaderboard.

6

Click New Game to jump into the next round. Your streak, total points, and win rate all update in real time.

The Scoring Formula

Hangman Score's points system rewards speed and accuracy. Every win starts at 1,000 points, then two deductions are applied:

Score = 1000 − (wrong guesses × 100) − (seconds × 2)
Minimum 100 points for a win • 0 points for a loss
  • Each wrong guess deducts 100 points.
  • Each second of play time deducts 2 points.
  • Even if the deductions would take you below zero, you still receive a minimum of 100 points for a win.
  • A loss always scores 0 points.

This means the fastest possible score on a short word with zero wrong guesses can exceed 900+ points. Longer, slower games still reward you, but the top leaderboard spots go to players who guess quickly and accurately.

Leaderboard & Stats

Every game you play (win or loss) is saved to your personal history. From the History page you can review each game's word, category, wrong guesses, time taken, and points earned.

The global Leaderboard ranks all signed-in players by total points accumulated across all their games. It also shows each player's average points per game — so a player who consistently scores high beats one who just plays thousands of games carelessly.

Your Stats include: total games, wins, losses, win rate, average wrong guesses, current win streak, best win streak, total points, and best single-game score.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an account to play?

No — you can play without signing in. However, your scores won't be saved and you won't appear on the leaderboard. Sign in with Google to track your progress.

How are words chosen?

Words are selected at random from a pool of over 800 curated words spread across eleven categories. The same word can appear multiple times across sessions.

Can I replay the same word?

Not intentionally — the randomiser picks from the full pool each time, so duplicates are possible but not guaranteed.

Is my score updated in real time?

Yes. As soon as a game ends, your score is saved and the leaderboard refreshes to reflect your new total.

What if I close the tab mid-game?

Unfinished games are not saved. Only completed games (wins and losses) count toward your history and score.
